Q. Can I do the five-day colon cleanse and drink juices?

A. Whilst you do the cleanse you will drink apple juice mixed with bentonite clay, psyllium husk and apple pectin every three hours. This bulks up in the colon and gives you something of a full feeling, so you may well find that it is enough for you. However, if you wish, you can drink extra juices or vegetable broth in between the clay drinks.

Q. Can I be active during either cleanse?

A. Strenuous activity is not a good idea, but you can remain relatively active doing work or the school run or whatever else you do, yes. It is a good idea to rest during the cleanse when you can, however, as this will help your body to channel its energies into deep cleansing work. For the first two days you are likely to feel tired and you may have a headache so this is likely to be when you need to rest most - after that you should start to feel better each day. Different people feel differently – some find their brain works better than usual on the cleanse whilst others feel slightly ‘zoned out.’ How much you do really depends on you and how you feel during the cleanse. It may be a good idea to do the first two days of the cleanse during a quiet weekend as you are likely to feel the least good during this time.

Q. What can I expect to feel like during the cleanse?

A. That depends on how your health currently is and how much toxic debris there is in your system. If you are used to drinking a lot of coffee and eating a lot of sugar and processed foods you are likely to feel headachy, hungry and even nauseous at the beginning. But keep going, because you feel better every day and by day 5 you should be feeling really good! People will be astounded if you tell them you haven’t eaten for five days. You may find you have headaches which come and go during the cleanse or you may experience ‘healing crises’ when certain aches and pains come to be ‘dealt with’ by the body’s innate healing systems.

Q. Will I be very hungry during the cleanse?

A. Everybody feels hungry for the first two days but for most, the hunger gets less every day and it is quite usual to feel reluctant to eat when it is time to break the fast. This is because the body starts to operate slightly differently during the fast; it is only when you are eating normally again that the appetite really returns. You are quite likely to have fantasies about your favourite foods during the fast and you are also likely to find that your eating patterns change afterwards – you will really appreciate the taste of food and you may be more picky about eating healthy foods.

Q. What will happen when I go to the loo?

A. For the first two days this will be a fairly normal experience, but on around day two or three you should start to see a black rubbery substance being expelled. There may be a surprisingly large amount of this and it can have quite a distinct aroma. This is mucoid plaque bound up with the clay mixture. Mucoid plaque is old, toxic mucus from your intestinal lining. It is very good for health to get rid of it because it harbours toxins and harmful bacteria and it stops the permeable gut lining from absorbing nutrients fully. Your body will replace it with healthy gut mucosa. You should go to the toilet at least once a day and preferably more; the cleanse comes with digestive enzymes to ensure that you ‘go’.

Q. Can I do either cleanse if I have had anaemia?

A. Do not do the cleanse if you have an extreme deficiency (see below). However, if you have mild deficiencies or your deficiencies have been corrected there should not be a problem doing the cleanse. Try to address deficiencies before doing the cleanse. After doing it, your gastrointestinal lining should absorb nutrients more effectively so that is a good time to work on deficiencies. If you become very weak during the cleanse you can always increase your intake of fluids, take a supplement, or stop the cleanse. You can also eat whilst doing the cleanse but this is not the most effective use of the cleanse.

Q. Can I take supplements during the juice detox or colon cleanse?

A. You can, but this is not advisable because the less you ingest, the more effective the cleanse will be. You can resume any supplement or herb programme you are on after you finish the cleanse.

Q. Can I take prescription drugs during a juice detox or colon cleanse?

A. If you are taking a prescription drug temporarily you should finish the course before starting the cleanse. If you are taking prescription drugs in the long term please check the safety information and if in doubt consult your GP. You may not be able to do the cleanse or you may be able to do it if you take the drug enough time away from the cleansing formula. If you are taking antibiotics, finish the course and take probiotics either before or after the cleanse.
