A centre of excellence for Complementary Medicine
THE NATURAL HEALTH CLINIC

- Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years, with the earliest uses of aromatics
being recorded in ancient Egypt, where the infusion method was developed to extract
oils such as frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood, juniper and spikenard from fragrant
plants.
- The ancient Egyptians used aromatic plants for burning during religious ceremonies,
and used fragrant oils during bathing and for massage, for both medicinal and cosmetic
reasons. They even used these aromatic oils during the embalming process to immortalise
their kings and queens.
- Aromatic massage is also an integral part of the Indian ayurvedic system, which has
been practised for over 3000 years.
- Aromatic oils were even being used over 2000 years ago in Greece. Hippocrates, considered
by many to be the father of medicine, believed that taking daily baths and massage
with fragrant oils was beneficial to good health.
- Essential oils influence both the systems of the body, and the state of mind. They
are easily absorbed into the skin, as when used in massage, and then into the circulatory
system which distributes them around the body. When inhaled, aromatic molecules
enter the bloodstream via the lungs, and help stimulate the release of endorphins.
- Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy, designed to treat the whole person, gently assisting
the body’s natural healing processes.
- Aromatherapy can be used to strengthen the immune system, relieve stress, and can
help with numerous ailments such as headaches, insomnia, fatigue, depression, muscle
aches, and joint pain.
- Here at the Natural Health Clinic, both our current practitioners offer therapeutic
aromatherapy massages. Clare Garland also offers aromatherapy facial treatments.
